Allegany County, Maryland is strategically situated between West Virginia and Pennsylvania, and connects to most US markets via highway and rail. The county is nestled between the Washington-Baltimore urban agglomeration to the east, and Pittsburgh to the north.

Allegany County is home to Frostburg State University, a four-year state university and a two-year college, Allegany College of Maryland. US Highways

US 220 runs through Allegany County, connecting North to New York at the Pennsylvania border, and South through West Virginia to southern North Carolina.

US 219 runs through Allegany County, connecting North to Buffalo NY and Ontario, CN, and South through West Virginia.

US Rt 40 runs through Allegany County. This route extends from New Jersey to Utah.

Interstate Highways

Interstate 68 runs east and west through Allegany County. I68 West connects Maryland to West Virginia. I68 East connects Allegany County to Washington County, Maryland and in close proximity of Interstate 81.

Allegany County is also 50 miles west of Interstate 70, which connects to the Baltimore and Washington markets heading East, and continues across the country West to Colorado.

Allegany County is 75 miles West of Interstate 81, which continues North to the Canadian border, and South to Tennessee.

Greater Cumberland Regional Airport is located in Allegany County. BWI Thurgood Marshall (130 miles), Pittsburgh International Airport (130 miles), Washington Dulles International Airport (130 miles), Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (130 miles).
